A Christmas to Remember

Hey, it’s been a while. What can we say, except that downtime is a rarity in the life of this Singin’ Lady.

What’s up, you say? I’ll tell you what’s up.

The Singin’ Ladies have started practicing for another year of Holiday Crooning, in preparation for our first “gig” of the season; Downtown Fredericksburg’s Holiday Open House*. This is how it all began…In 2010, with caroling and a goal of mutual support and love and – of course – music. We’ve shifted and changed since, played many a showcase and benefit, but at our core we’re the same. We love singing and we love singing with one another. After the open house, the Ladies will continue caroling in the nursing homes of the ‘Burg, which is always a fulfilling experience.

On November 2nd, our fabulous founder Ashleigh Chevalier is releasing her debut album “From the Soles.” How exciting is that?! Join her at the Kenmore Inn that night to celebrate with and hear that girl belt out more than a few tunes*. We’re sure it will be an extra special performance.

And major congrats go out to Amber Lawrence (of Sunset Syndicate). She and Adam Douberly were married this September. We wish those crazy kids many years of joy and happiness.

Whatsa Happenin’

Hey all, it’s been a while, and if you believed all that about the Ladies hunkerin’ down and layin’ low well…. I don’t know if that’s even possible. The minute a woman slows down is the minute the Universe says, “Oh no you don’t!”

Relay for Life was a blast and immediately after it was over the Ladies started work on Lisa Wyland’s June showcase at the Colonial Tavern. Performing with Lisa were Ashleigh Chevalier, Leigh D’Lugos, Becky Hunt, Tara Jacobs, Amber Lawrence, and Karen Young.Image

Check the Goings On page for some upcoming Singin’ Lady-related shows. Looks like our next performance will be in September at Sharps Sessions. Sharps is always a good time, so we hope you can make it out.

Do Right Women

What month that was. Wow! Time to tone it down before things get rollin’ again.

Some of the ladies will be hunkering down with pen, paper, computer, guitar, cello, squeeze-box, and Lord knows what else, and focusing on creating new material. Maybe we’ll come up with something we can share with ya’ll on this site. Stay tuned….

And some of the ladies will be giving back in other ways. Ashleigh Chevalier will be performing with Bruce Middle and Joe Kane at the Brian Stroebel Memorial fundraiser, April 22nd at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds.

The Singing Ladies will also be making an appearance at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Sunday, May 19th, at the track at James Monroe High School. Emily Barker, Leigh D’Lugos, Maude Harris, Amber Lawrence (of Sunset Syndicate), Lisa Wyland, and Karen Young will sing an hour-long set that begins at 6pm.

Spring has sprung and March is turning out to be a productive month for the Singin’ Ladies of the ‘Burg. Here are some of the things keeping the ladies busy.

Abbe Buck has the audience at Miss Lady and Mr. Man’s Open Mic Jam in stitches most every week with her maniacal combination of music and humor. Miss Buck will be at the 909 Saloon, March 10th for her second Fredericksburg solo show (Her first was at the Colonial Tavern and it was a laff-riot!), which she’s calling Mayhem Meets Cabaret. We call it Not to be Missed.

Laurie Rose Griffith and Karen Jonas join Maude Harris as she hosts yet another fabulous Singin’ Lady Showcase at the 909 Saloon. The theme this time is the music of Ireland, from traditional jigs and ballads to tunes from U2 and the Cranberries. Also performing with Maude: Emily Barker, Kathy Douberly, Leigh D’Lugos, Wanda Grimes, Jane Henshaw, Jenna Kole, Amber Lawrence, Mauguerite Roche, Liz Christmas Taylor, Lisa Wyland, and Karen Young.

Seth Casana’s 2nd Annual Rock Lotto, happening March 31st, will feature several Singin’ Ladies of the ‘Burg. Emily Barker, Maude Harris, Haylee Hill, Jenna Kole, Liz Taylor, Lisa Wyland, and Karen Young will be performing all new material, in this battle of randomly assembled bands. Don’t know what the Rock Lotto is? Check out this Magazine 33 article on last year’s show.

(Let’s try this again.) Vaudeville comes to Dorian Cleveland’s Open Mic, January 16th!

Miss Abbe Buck is a self-proclaimed “…dye-in-the-wool big band performance artist.” We say she is wacky and fun and has a fabulous voice, straight out of a bygone era. Pure entertainment. And…she’s the special guest artist at Dorian Cleveland’s open mic this Monday (January 16th), where you’re bound to see a Singin’ Lady or two (or three or four).

But, back to Abbe.

This lady has been singing since day one. She started voice training at 13 while growing up in Chicago, though she claims to be a late-bloomer. She resumed a serious singing career in her mid-30’s with Al Raymond’s and Vincent Lopez Jr’s big band in New York City, and Philadelphia, and while performing in New York, Abbe made contact with the great vocalist Rosemary Clooney, who urged the completion of Buck’s CD “Big Band Swing and Saloon Style – Songs from a Bygone Era.”  This singin’ lady is really somethin’!

Q-Balls Benefit for Matthew – Singin’ Ladies Represent!

Some of the Singin’ Ladies and some of their strummin’/drummin’ men will be performing at QBalls this Friday night. It’s only a $5 cover and all proceeds go to little Matthew, who is 6 and struggling with a reoccurring bout of cancer.
