Do Right Women

What month that was. Wow! Time to tone it down before things get rollin’ again.

Some of the ladies will be hunkering down with pen, paper, computer, guitar, cello, squeeze-box, and Lord knows what else, and focusing on creating new material. Maybe we’ll come up with something we can share with ya’ll on this site. Stay tuned….

And some of the ladies will be giving back in other ways. Ashleigh Chevalier will be performing with Bruce Middle and Joe Kane at the Brian Stroebel Memorial fundraiser, April 22nd at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds.

The Singing Ladies will also be making an appearance at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Sunday, May 19th, at the track at James Monroe High School. Emily Barker, Leigh D’Lugos, Maude Harris, Amber Lawrence (of Sunset Syndicate), Lisa Wyland, and Karen Young will sing an hour-long set that begins at 6pm.

For more info on these events, see the links below. And if you wanna know about even more Singin’ Lady goings on, check out our Goings On page.

Primavera

Spring has sprung and March is turning out to be a productive month for the Singin’ Ladies of the ‘Burg. Here are some of the things keeping the ladies busy.

Abbe Buck has the audience at Miss Lady and Mr. Man’s Open Mic Jam in stitches most every week with her maniacal combination of music and humor. Miss Buck will be at the 909 Saloon, March 10th for her second Fredericksburg solo show (Her first was at the Colonial Tavern and it was a laff-riot!), which she’s calling Mayhem Meets Cabaret. We call it Not to be Missed.

Laurie Rose Griffith and Karen Jonas join Maude Harris as she hosts yet another fabulous Singin’ Lady Showcase at the 909 Saloon. The theme this time is the music of Ireland, from traditional jigs and ballads to tunes from U2 and the Cranberries. Also performing with Maude: Emily Barker, Kathy Douberly, Leigh D’Lugos, Wanda Grimes, Jane Henshaw, Jenna Kole, Amber Lawrence, Mauguerite Roche, Liz Christmas Taylor, Lisa Wyland, and Karen Young.

Emily Barker, Maude Harris, Haylee Hill, Jenna Kole, Liz Taylor, Lisa Wyland, and Karen Young will be performing all new material, in this battle of randomly assembled bands. Don’t know what the Rock Lotto is? Check out this Magazine 33 article on last year’s show.

(Let’s try this again.) Vaudeville comes to Dorian Cleveland’s Open Mic, January 16th!

Miss Abbe Buck is a self-proclaimed “…dye-in-the-wool big band performance artist.” We say she is wacky and fun and has a fabulous voice, straight out of a bygone era. Pure entertainment. And…she’s the special guest artist at Dorian Cleveland’s open mic this Monday (January 16th), where you’re bound to see a Singin’ Lady or two (or three or four).

But, back to Abbe.

This lady has been singing since day one. She started voice training at 13 while growing up in Chicago, though she claims to be a late-bloomer. She resumed a serious singing career in her mid-30′s with Al Raymond’s and Vincent Lopez Jr’s big band in New York City, and Philadelphia, and while performing in New York, Abbe made contact with the great vocalist Rosemary Clooney, who urged the completion of Buck’s CD “Big Band Swing and Saloon Style – Songs from a Bygone Era.”  This singin’ lady is really somethin’!

Thursday, December 8th. Jenna Kole- along with her husband, percussionist Jay Kole – will be at Kybecca Wine Bar from 8-1030pm, (no cover but there is a food/drink purchase requirement).

Jenna draws on a wide range of influences from John Prine and Rickie Lee Jones to Radiohead and Pixies to create personal textural alternative folk music. Go here and listen.

Friday, December 9th. Karen Jonas gets her Americana on at the Colonial Tavern, with fellow singer/songwriter, Alex Culbreth. Together they make up the Parlor Soldiers, trading shifts at the guitar and a salvaged drum set, singin’ tunes of heartache and heartbreak along with some more niche pieces complete with outlaws, sheriffs, hookers, and, of course, a lot of whiskey.

And who might be sharing the bill with the Soldiers? The Little Black Clouds; Jenna and Jay in full band mode.

Dec. 3rd Blues Show at the Otter House, Featuring Ashleigh Chevalier!

How The Singin’ Ladies Came About

Hello!

Fredericksburg is full of talented musicians, and there are many accomplished  female vocalists in the area. In winter of 2010, a few of Fredericksburg ladies realized they would like to collaborate. YES, everyone has their own gig (be it band, solo, or what have you). Occassionally, however, we like to perform live together, harmonizing, and doing guest appearances at each others shows. What we realized beyond that is we truly love to play music with each other and fellowship. Every so often, we all get together and jam. We bond, we blend, and we learn and share our music. We listen to each other’s original music and jam on favorites. This makes our live performances together stronger, and grows our sense of community and comraderie with each other.

This past Christmas we sang Christmas Carols outside of Virginia Wine Experience  on the corner of George Str & William Str and had a blast! On December 4, we sang carols at midnight on legendary Billy Hancock’s Christmas show with Singin’ Lady, Ashleigh Chevalier. This year, we plan to record a Holiday Album, where the proceeds go to charity.

The FIRST ever Women of Fredericksburg Showcase Series, dubbed WOF Showcase, will begin this summer at 909 Saloon, Friday, June 17, 2011, from 7-10PM. The first showcase will feature Bethany Wolfe, other singin’ ladies will perform with her throughout the evening! Don’t miss this!

The sense of warmth and community between us is precious and growing with every jam session and every gig.

With Love in Music,

The Singin’ Ladies
